An Imperial Valley native has become the first Latina appointed to the California Supreme Court.

Justice Patricia Guerrero has been confirmed by the Commission on Judicial Appointments. Guerrero, 50, was born in the Imperial Valley and graduated from Imperial High School in 1990. She has served as a prosecutor, Superior Court judge and was appointed to the Court of Appeal, Fourth Appellate District, Division One in 2017. The new Justice is the daughter of Mexican immigrants. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California, Berkeley in 1994 and a Juris Doctor degree from Stanford Law School. She will take her seat on the court after she is sworn in by Governor Gavin Newsom.
