The number of migrants crossing the International Border in the Southwest has dropped.

According to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) monthly update, migrant encounters in June 2024 show a significant decline. CBP credits President Joe Biden's temporarily suspending the entry of certain noncitizens across the southern border for the decrease. Border Patrol encounters between ports of entry were 29 per cent lower than in May of 2024. In June - the first month in which the Presidential Proclamation has been in effect - the U. S. Border patrol recorded over 83,500 encounters between ports of entry. Total southwest border irregular encounters in June were over 88,600, a 30 per cent decrease from May of 2024.

Nationawide in June, seizures of cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, fentanyl and marijuana combined by weight decreased by 17 per cent compared to May. Heroin seizures increased by 17 per cent, cocaine seizures were up by 13 per cent. Through the end of June, CBP has seized over 15,000 pounds of fentanyl in fiscal year 2023.
