(First ever shortage declared on the Colorado River)...The declaration was announced recently by the Bureau of Reclamation.
They also announced initial cuts in Arizona and Nevada. Because of the high priority the Imperial County holds for Colorado River Water, they are not affected by the initial action resulting from the shortage declaration. Imperial Irrigation District Board President James Hanks says despite that, the IID is actively monitoring the ongoing drought conditions and forecasted reservoir elevations as the District looks tto protect the Imperial Valley's sole water supply. Hanks said the IID supports a collaborative approach to river management and renewed efforts of the Basin States to ensure the long-term reliability of the Colorado River system, however, thee District will protect and defend the senior water rights tthat fform the foundation of our rural community.. The Board President said the IID will continue to work with its growers and Sou7thern California water conservation partners to ensure the efficient management of all Colorado River Resources. Hanks said he anticipates additional discussions with Federal and Basin State representatives.
