(More information released on Tuesdays tragedy)...According to the California Highway Patrol,
the Ford Expedition packed with 25 people had been travling westbound on Norrish Road when it ran directly into the path of the tractor-trailer rig that was northbound on Highway 115. The driver of the Expedition was identified only as a 28 year old Mexicali resident. He suffered fatal injuries. The driver of the big rig was identifid as 68 year old Joe Beltran of El Centro. Beltran suffered major injuries and was flown to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs. The County coroner's office is working to identify all the other victims. 12 died at the scene and another person died at El Centro Regional Medical Center. The CHP's Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team is conducting the traffic collision investigation. Reports indicate the rear seats had been removed from the Expedition to accomodat more people and special agents from Homeland Security Investigations out of San Diego have initiated a human smuggling investigation.
