A multi-agency investigation intercepted a drone-based smuggling operation at Calipatria State Prison.
On Monday, November 18, 2024, two individuals were taken into custody after they were seen using a drone to drop drugs and other contraband at the prison. According to the Imperial County District Attorney's Office, based on previous intelligence, prison personnel were in place to monitor drone activity in the area of the prison.Two individuals were seen operating a drone that flew into a secure area of the prison and dropped a package. The package contained illegal contraband including marijuana and a large amount of methamphetamine. The drone then flew back to the individuals and they drove away. Imperial County Sheriff's Office deputies conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle and located the drone and packaging materials consistent with the smuggling operation. Two female suspects were arrested, one adult woman and one juvenile. The adult was booked into Imperial County Jail.
The multi-agency operation was conducted by the Calipatria State Prison Investigative Services Unit, Imperial County Sheriff's Office, the Law Enforcement Coordination Center, Intelligence Division, and the U.S. Border Patrol.
