The California Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal accident.
The accident was reported shortly after 1:00 a.m. on Friday, March 25. According to the CHP investigation, a woman was driving southbound on Bowker Road near Cole Road. The vehicle apparently drifted off the roadway and went into the Acacia Canal. A man driving a tractor in a nearby field called in the accident. Emergency crews were unable to get to the vehicle because of the depth of the water and the strong currents and requested the IID divert water from the canal. Once the water was diverted, firefighters used the jaws of life to access the vehicle where they discovered the body of a 40-year-old woman, a resident of Calexico. Investigation confirmed that the woman was not wearing a safety belt at the time of the crash. The woman's identity has not been released. The accident remains under investigation.
