(One arrested Monday evening)....It happened at the Highway 86 checkpoint near Salton City.
A 1987 pickup was sent to the secondary inspection area. A Border Patrol K-9 Detection Team alerted to an area below the dashboard, on the passenger side of the vehicle. Nothing was found in that area, but an inspection of the engine compartment resulted in the discovery of two brown and yellow packages underneath the manifold. The two packages tested positive for cocaine. The packages weighed a total of 5.3 pounds, with an estimated value of over $76,000. The driver of the vehicle, a legal permanent resident, was arrested. The vehicle and the narcotics were seized.
