(Dia De Muertos is coming up).....It should not be confused with Halloween.
They are very different. Halloween is mostly a children's event, Dia De Muertos is a Mexican tradition to remember and honor those who have passed on. Part of the tradition is the creation of a special Altar. The City of Calexico Recreation Department will be putting an Altar together, and they are inviting the public to participate. The more creative, the better. It is for anyone ages 12 and above. To participate, you pick up a skull provided by the Department, by October 21. You take it home and decorate it, and creativity is encouraged. The decorated skulls are to be dropped off on October 28th The Dia De Muertos Altar will be put together using the decorated skulls. The Altar will be at the Carmen Durazo Cultural Arts Center in Calexico. It is free to participate, but there are limited pieces so you should sign-up as soon as possible. Contact the Recreation Department for all the information. The Altar will be on display at the Arts Center November 9-12. They are also asking for framed photos of passed loved ones to be included in the Altar. They should be dropped off on October 21st5.
