The first Latino justice on the California Supreme Court has died.
Cruz Reynoso , 90 , died Friday in Oroville. Reynoso was born to Mexican immigrants and spent summers working in the fields of the San Joaquin Valley. Reynoso was able to attend college and graduated from the UC Berkeley School of Law. He then moved to El Centro and established a private practice. He rose to be the director of the California Rural Legal Assistance . After leaving CRLA in 1972 Reynoso taught law. He was appointed to the 3rd District Appellate Court and in 1982 , Governor Jerry Brown appointed him to the State Supreme Court, the first Latino to ever serve on the State's highest court.
