An Imperial man has been found guilty of Grand Theft.

James Salazar was convicted of embezzling approximately $300,000 from a family trust. An investigation was begun in July of 2024 by the Imperial Police Department following allegations that Salazar, as a trustee, embezzled the money from family members who were entitled to receive equal shares of an inheritance. The investigation led to Salazar being criminally charged with several counts of grand theft and embezzlement. Aggravating factors included committing the crimes with planning and sophistication and taking advantage of a position of trust. Salazar pleaded no contest to all counts of grand theft and the aggravating factors on May 13, 2025. On June 25, Salazar was sentenced to serve the maximum of 4 years and 4 months in Imperial County Jail where he is now residing.

Previously, a civil lawsuit was filed by the family and a judgement against Salazar was ordered in the amount of nearly $798,000, the amount includes double the damages and attorney's fee.
