The State of California has announced an extension for individual California taxpayers to claim a refund for tax year 2016.

Taxpayers normally have four years to file a claim for a state tax refund in California. The 2016 state income tax was due in 2017 so the standard four-year statute of limitations for claiming a refund would have expired on April 15 of this year. The State has extended that deadline to May 17 , 2021. The Internal Revenue Service recently announced that May 17 , 2021 is the extended date for individuals who are due a refund on their 2017 income taxes. The IRS normally has a three-year statute of limitations to file a claim for a federal tax refund.
