The CBP says they have experienced an increase in encounters and arrests, but they say that is not unusual since encounters have been on the increase since April 2020. In March 2021, CBP encountered 172,000 people attempting to enter the US along the Southwest border. That is a 71% increase over February 2021. There has been a significant increase of unaccompanied children from Central America crossing the Southwest border. 18890 in March 2021. That is a 100 percent increase over February. Large groups of 100 or more individuals detained came in at 49 in March 2021, totaling 4,700. That is actually down from year ago numbers. Nationwide, drug seizures were down by 14 percent. Pandemic effects on the CBP; more than 8,300 CBP employees have tested positive for COVID 19 and 28 have passed away as a result of the virus. From January 2020 through March 2021 nearly 178,000 FDA prohibited COVID 19 test kits have been seized in 417 incidents, more than 34.6 million counterfeit face masks seized in 707 incidents, 37,000 FDA prohibited anti-virus lanyards have been seized in 118 incidents, nearly 39,000 FDA prohibited Cloroquine tablets seized in 233 incidents, nearly 6,700 tablets of antibiotics seized in 111 incidents, and about 300,000 containers of hand sanitizer seized in 36 incidents.
