(Spill creates an emergency situation)...It happened overnight.
County Fire Chief Alfredo Estrada said approximately 200 to 300 gallons of Sulfuric Acid mixed with Alkaline at a facility in the 200 Block of Young Road in Calipatria. The mixture created a plume over the City of Calipatria. The Office of Emergency Services sent a reverse 911 to all Calipatria residents, advising them to stay indoors and close all windows. The Chief said it appears some unknown suspects opened the valve of a wagon containing the chemical. The County Haz Mat team was activated and they closed the valve. A private company from Riverside County came in to clean up the spill. There have been no reported injuries as a result of the spill. Chief Estrada says the all clear was given at 3:00 Friday morning.
