The U. s. Department of Justice has issued a Fraud Alert for scammers claiming to represent the DOJ.
The scammers falsely represent themselves as Department of Justice investigators or employees and attempt to obtain personal information during the calls which seem to target the elderly. They sometimes leave a voicemail with a call back number. That number directs users to a recorded menu that matches the recorded menu for the DOJ main phone number. Eventually the caller reaches an operator who steers them to someone claiming to be an investigator. That " investigator " then tries to gain the user's personal information.
Those who receive these calls are encouraged not to provide any personal information and report these scams to the FTC website. Fraud can also be reported to the FBI.
