Caltrans says the Interstate 8 Update Project has been completed.
The project involved a 48-mile stretch of Interstate 8 from State Route 111 just east of El Centro to the California / Arizona border. The I-8 Update Project was completed in five segments as Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavement ( CRCP ) was used to upgrade the roadway. CRCP is a process that incorporates placing steel reinforcing bars within the concrete along the entire length of the lanes. This results in a smoother ride and is expected to last more than 70 years. The $322.3 million project was completed on time and under budget with a savings of nearly $95 million. The completed project will be celebrated Wednesday , December 18 at the Caltrans Midway Maintenance Yard.
