A shipment of bell peppers from Mexico yielded a surprise for Customs and Border Protection officers at the Calexico East commercial facility.
On Monday , shortly before 5:00 p.m. , a truck entered the cargo facility with a load listed as green bell peppers. A CBP officer referred the truck and cargo to secondary inspection where a CBP canine team alerted to the pallets of peppers on the trailer. Officers discovered 100 cellophane-wrapped packages of cocaine mixed in with the peppers. The narcotics weighed 242 pounds and have an estimated street value of $2.1 million. The truck driver , a 45-year old Mexican citizen was taken into custody and turned over to Homeland Security Investigations.
