(Some Asylum Seekers have an additional burden)….They are part of the Immigrant Protection Protocols program.

Developed under the Trump Administration, it calls for the Asylum Seekers to remain in Mexico during the Asylum Process. Several have been sent to Mexicali. Those staying at a migrant center in Mexicali must find their own transportation to travel over 100 miles to the San Ysidro Port of Entry, up to San Diego to attend mandatory hearings during the application process. Those housed in Mexicali are those who applied for asylum at the Calexico Port, with some from Texas and others who were arrested by the Border Patrol after entering the United States illegally.
