The County of Imperial has acknowledged that their website and some of their systems have been hit by ransomware.
On Saturday , April 13, 2019 , the County became aware of a suspected ransomware attack. Law enforcement agencies were contacted , an investigation was launched , and work began to bring the website back online and restore access to its systems. The County retained a forensic firm to work with the County in restoring all systems.
The investigation determined that a bad actor gained access to the County systems and deployed the ransomware malware variant Ryuk on the Imperial County system. The Ryuk malware encrypted files on some of the County of Imperial servers , making them inaccessible. The County says that , to date , there is no evidence that any data has been accessed but are continuing the investigation.
