A devastating fire swept through a block of downtown El Centro>

The fire, on the southside of the 400 block of Broadway, was reported at about 11:00 p.m. Wednesday. El Centro Fire Department and quickly sent out multiple alarms for mutual aid from fire departments as far away as Yuma. Fire crews remained on the scene through the night and into early Thursday morning. Over 180 IID customers, including KXO AM1230 and FM107.5, were left without power due to the blaze. Video shows flames leaping high into the nighttime air. No injuries were reported and a careful search of the burned rubble came up empty. The fire destroyed almost all the structures on the southside of Broadway but firefighters were able to keep it from spreading to other buildings. Cause of the fire is under investigation.
