The United Farm Workers Union (UFW) will not be taking part in any Cesar Chavez Day activities.
The farmworkers union said Tuesday that the UFW has " learned of deeply troubling allegations that one of the union's cofounders, Cesar Chavez, behaved in ways that are incompatible with our organization's values". The union went on to say that some of the reports are family issues but far more troubling are allegations involving abuse of young women or minors. The union added that " the allegations are serious enough that we feel compelled to take urgent steps to learn more and provide space for people who may have been victimized to find support". The union called on allies and supporters to take part in immigration justice events and acts of service to support farmworkers or empower vulnerable people in their own communities. Cesar Chavez Day is a U.S. federal commemorative holiday, proclaimed by President Barrack Obama in 2014. It is also a California state holiday and is celebrated on March 31 every year.
