Two men are in jail following a copper theft on Monday.
Imperial County Sheriff's deputies responded to the Ormat Facility on Even Hewes Highway at about 10:39 Monday morning. Two male suspects had entered the property and stole several pieces of copper wire from inside a trans former. The pair were driving a Mule SUV. According to the victim, approximately $50,000 worth of damage and stolen property had occurred. Deputies put out a Be on the Lookout call with a description of the men and the vehicle. About an hour later, the Mule was located in the area of Whitlock Road. A traffic stop was attempted but the suspects failed to yield and headed off into the desert where patrol vehicles could not follow. A California Highway Patrol helicopter was requested for support but was unable to locate the suspects.
At about 3:30 Monday afternoon, deputies located the Mule SUV at a residence off Hartshorn Road, on the outskirts of Holtville. The homeowner granted deputies permission to search the residence and property. During the search both suspects were located and taken into custody. The pair, Roy Schaffner and Ernesto Flores, were booked into Imperial County Jail on charges of Burglary, Grand Theft, Possession of Stolen Property, Vandalism, and Evading.
