(The severe thunderstorm caused a lot of damage in Imperial County)....Damage extended into Coachella Valley as well.

The Imperial Irrigation District says it may take days to repair the damage. Over any inch of rain pelted the county and wind gusts of over 60 miles per hour knocked down trees and power poles, resulting in power outages to thousands of IID customers. More than 50 poles were knocked down near Holtville alone. The district says many have had their power restored, but it could be a few days before everyone is back on-line. Flooding, debris and downed power poles forced the closure of several roads. Parts of Highway 98 open, but Highway 86 is closed to traffic North of Westmorland to Highway 78. Again, officials say it could take a few days to clean up all the mess created by the storm. Several traffic incidents were reported by the California Highway Patrol, including several Big Rigs. According to the latest information, no injuries have been reported.

As of Tuesday morning, there were still an estimated 1,000 IID customers in the Brawley area and another 1,000 in the Calexico area that were without electricity.
