(Juneteenth Celebrated in El Centro).....Juneteenth is June 19th.

According to history, on June 19th, 1865, the last confederate community of enslaved Americans in Galveston, Texas was notified by Union Major General Gordon Granger that they had been freed with the passage of the Emancipation Proclamation. The Imperial Valley Social Justice Committee will be hosting a celebration of the day this Saturday. The event will be held at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Sports Pavilion, in El Centro, from 3 to 8 pm. The public is invited to enjoy food, music, entertainment, games, face painting, spoken word, vendors and more.
