Weist Lake will reopen on Friday.

The Imperial County Department of Public Works says the popular lake will be reopened to recreational activities on Friday, June 30th. Following extensive water quality monitoring and analysis it was found that bacteria levels in the lake have significantly decreased and are now below the recommended safety levels.

Weist Lake had been closed to recreational activities several weeks ago when levels of bacteria surpassed the recommended levels for safe human contact. The County Department of Public Works acted to increase the water flow into the lake and lowered the level of contamination. The Imperial County Department of Public Health's Environmental Division, the Colorado River Basin Regional Water Quality Control Board, the Imperial Irrigation District, and private landowners worked to address the issues.
