The Brawley Police Department has updated information on an incident last week where a man apparently tried to lure children into his vehicle.

Commander Jonathan Blackstone of the Brawley Police Department said that an extensive follow-up to the Thursday, September15, 2022 incident led investigators to the vehicle and the man involved. Detectives interviewed the man, who was cooperative, He said that his juvenile son, who was a passenger in the vehicle, informed him that he smelled burning rubber. The man told detectives that he couldn't smell anything so he asked a couple of juveniles and adults if they could smell anything Detectives were able to obtain surveillance video and observe the vehicle pull into a parking lot and park. A man got out the vehicle and opened the hood of the vehicle. A juvenile got out of the car and walked into the store. The man then got back in the SUV and began to pull out of the parking lot when two juveniles walked in front of the SUV. The man can be seen talking to the two juveniles. Another group of juveniles passed by, and the man can be seen speaking to one of the group. The man then approached two adults at the gas pumps, one came over to the SUV and leaned into the passenger compartment. The juvenile that got out of the vehicle earlier, returned and they man and his son left. Detectives determined that this was not an abduction attempt, but a misunderstanding and at no point were any juveniles in danger.
