An El Centro resident interrupted a burglary in progress.

Police received a report of a burglary in progress at 2:39 a.m. Tuesday. A man said that there was someone in the bedroom of his house in the 2000 block of S. 3rd Street. The suspect was described as a man, 5' 10" tall, about 30, wearing beige-colored shorts, no shirt and carrying a hammer. The resident took the hammer from the suspect who then left and was last seen walking away from the house. According to police, the suspect got away with a .22 caliber rifle, a white gold chain and a small safe with vehicle keys and miscellaneous documents. The hammer was booked as evidence. Value of the loss was estimated at over $3,000.
