Strong winds whipped through the Imperial Valley Tuesday.

Sustained winds of 40 to 45 miles per hour with gusts hitting 54 miles per hour dropped visibility to near zero and caused a series of accidents and a road closure. Highway 86 was closed from Bannister Road to the Riverside County line from about 4:00 p.m. until almost 8:00 p.m. No serious injuries were reported from a number of accidents that occurred due to the wind. The winds are expected to diminish Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.
