(One dead and three injured)...It happened Christmas Day.
National Guard personnel operating a mobile surveillance platform obsereved a suspicious vehicle drive south bound on Miniwawa Truck Trail near Jamul. About ten minutes later, they spotted the same vehicle, a black Honda, traveling north on the same Truck Trailer at a high rate of speed. The National Guard Personnel notified the Border Patrol via radio. Agents assigned to the area responded to the location. An Agent in a marked vehicle attempted to stop the Honda near Pio Pio Campground. The Honda did stop momentarily but then sped away. The suspect vehicle drove through the campground. Another agent attempted to block the exit from the campground. The Honda struck the patrol unit and continued on, in an easterly direction, with Border Patrol agents in pursuit. Honda drove off an embankment at mile marker 10 and crashed, ejecting three occupants. The agents requested emergency medical personnel. The driver of the Honda, who had not been ejected, and he attempted to flee on foot. He was detained after a short foot chase. After a short time Cal Fire, the CHP and EMTs arrived. It was determined one of the passengers ejected had suffered major head trauma and he was pronounced dead at the scene. He was identified only as a citizen of Mexico.. The other three, including the driver were transported to San Diego area hospitals for treatment. The incident is being investigated by the California Highway Patrol and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. It is also being reviewed by the San Diego County Medical Examiners office and the CBP Office of Professional Responsibility. The DHS Office of Inspector Geneeral was also notified.
