Governor Gavin Newsom has vetoed AB 1021.

The Assembly Bill authored by Assemblymember Chad Mayes of Rancho Mirage. The bill , opposed by the Imperial Irrigation District , would have opened the door for Coachella Valley representation on the IID board. IID Board President James Hanks said , " Governor Newsom recognized that the expiration of the 99-year power lease for energy service to Coachella Valley requires proper time and stakeholder engagement to study and plan for. The IID Board recognized it could only be effective in resolving the issues raised in AB 1021 by being proactive in it's commitment to mutually beneficial local solutions."

In July the IID Board established Coachella Valley Energy Commission to address local energy issues and establish a strategic plan for continued energy service and governance in the Coachella Valley after 2033 as the locally driven alternative to AB 1021. The Commission consists of 12 members from both Riverside and Imperial counties and meets monthly.
