A train derailed in El Centro shortly before 11:00 p.m. Monday.
The incident occurred in the area of 6th and Woodward when the train apparently slipped off the tracks. An estimated 200 residents in the area were evacuated after a possible leak was reported. El Centro Police and Fire Departments responded and were aided by Imperial County Sheriff's deputies and Border Patrol agents in sealing off the area and notifying residents of the problem. Calexico Fire Department responded to assist El Centro Fire. El Centro Public Works Department and the American Red Cross are also assisting at the scene. The Imperial Irrigation District has crews on the site for damaged utility poles. Most streets in the area were reopened for traffic at about 3:00 a.m. but the area of 6th and Woodward is closed and expected to be closed for most of the day Tuesday as Union Pacific crews work to clear up the site. Seven railcars were said to be involved.
