Two separate drug smuggling attempts at two separate Border Patrol checkpoints resulted in arrests.
The first smuggling attempt occurred Tuesday afternoon at the Highway 111 checkpoint. A Border Patrol canine team alerted to a PT Cruiser. After a search , 5.27 pounds of fentanyl was discovered in the vehicles oil pan. the drugs have a street value of nearly $60,000. The driver , a U. S. citizen , was turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration.
The second attempt occurred at about 9:45 p.m. Tuesday at the Highway 86 checkpoint. A 36-year old woman with to male passengers in her car was sent to secondary inspection after a canine team alerted to the car. Agents discovered about 2 and a half pounds of methamphetamine in a handbag in the car. Agents also discovered a .38 caliber derringer handgun in a backpack in the car. The driver and both passengers were turned over to the Imperial County Sheriff's Office.
