More than 3,100 pounds of methamphetamine , fentanyl powder , fentanyl pills and heroin were seized Friday at the Otay Mesa commercial facility.
U. S. Customs and Border Protection ( CBP ) officials are calling it the second largest meth seizure ever on the Southern border. According to the CBP press release , at about 9:45 a.m. Friday a tractor-trailer arrived at the commercial facility with a cargo manifested as medical supplies. The big rig was referred to secondary inspection where the port's imaging system found anomalies with the rear of the trailer. A canine team alerted to boxes in the trailer and a search led to the discovery of 1,816 packages commingled with the medical supplies. The packages contained 3,014 pounds of meth , 64 pounds of heroin , 29 pounds of fentanyl powder and almost 37 pounds of fentanyl pills. The drugs have an estimated street value of $7.2 million. The driver , a 47-year old Mexican citizen , was arrested and turned over to the joint investigative team of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement , Homeland Security Investigations and the Drug Enforcement Administration.
