The first death from the COVID-19 virus has been reported in Imperial County.
Imperial County Health Officer Dr. Stephen Munday said that the individual passed away in a hospital in San Diego. The person was described as someone who was older , had other high-risk medical issues and had travelled outside of the Valley. According to the County Health Department the patient had minimal local community exposure and spent time at residences in both Imperial County and near Mexicali , Baja California , Mexico.
As of Thursday , there have been 43 cases of the coronavirus confirmed in Imperial County. According to Dr. Munday , 6 of the 43 have been deemed fully recovered and are no longer in isolation. There are still several cases pending results. Both Dr. Munday and Imperial County Chief Executive Officer Tony Rouhotas stressed that people should stay at home. Trips out should be only for essential tasks and you should stay at least six feet away from others to " flatten the curve" and slow the spread of the coronavirus.
Dr. Munday also said that it is recommended that people wear a mask while out in public. A bandana or a homemade mask should be used This will help in controlling the spread of the virus. A mask should not be considered a substitute for social distancing. There have been instances of community spread of the virus and that people should continue to self-isolate.
