Imperial County officials have declared a local health emergency in response to the novel coronavirus ( COVID-19 ) disease.
Imperial County Board of Supervisors Chairman Luis Plancarte said , " The health and safety of the residents of Imperial County are of primary concern to our Board and county staff. We will utilize all resources and assistance available to protect our community". The declaration is , according to County Health Officer Dr. Stephan Munday , " an important and necessary step as we prepare to respond to novel coronavirus disease in our community". The declaration will allow local officials to request support from local , regional , state and federal agencies and ensures that local health professionals have the necessary tools to respond to this threat.
To date , there have been no confirmed cases of the virus in Imperial County. The County Health Department is not only working with state and federal officials but also working with health officials from Baja California , Mexico to have the most updated information to make informed decisions for their agencies.
The Imperial County Public Health Department recommends that the following steps are best to prevent respiratory illness:
Wash hands often with soap and water.
Avoid touching eyes , nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
Stay home when you are sick.
Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
The declaration for the local emergency will be on the Tuesday Board of Supervisor's agenda.
