The California Highway Patrol has released more information about a Monday afternoon traffic accident.
The accident occurred at 1:30 p.m. Monday on eastbound Interstate 8 near Forrester Road. A vehicle was eastbound on Interstate 8 , driven by 38-year old Gerardo Gaxiola of La Mirada , California. Gaxiola saw a vehicle in his rear view mirror closing at a high rate of speed. The trailing car ran into the rear of Gaxiola's vehicle causing it to run off the road , run through a perimeter fence , roll over and come to rest on it's wheels in a nearby field. The other car left the road, ran into the center divider and rolled over , coming to rest on it's top and blocking one lane of westbound traffic. The freeway was shut down for approximately 40 minutes in order to allow three air ambulances to land and evacuate victims. Gaxiola was not injured. The driver of the other car , 36-year old Joseph P. Bias , of Calipatria and passengers , Taylor Hamilton , 28 , of Calipatria and Fernando Garcia , 33 , of Michoacán , Mexico all sustained moderate to major injuries. The accident remains under investigation.
