(New Year, New Laws)…The Governor signed over 1,000 new laws to take effect in 2020.
One deals with gun possession. If a person is banned from having a gun in another state, they can no longer legally possess a gun in California. Food handlers will now be required to take training on major food-based allergens. Those who seek a state-issued food handler card will have until the end of 2020 to receive the training. School Districts will have more power over the creation of new charter schools in their communities, and new teachers at charter schools will be required to hold the same credentials as those in traditional public schools. Children whose parents have unpaid school lunch bills won’t be denied to at least an alternate selection, and can’t be shamed or treated differently than other students. Students up to the fifth grade cannot be suspended for disrupting school activities or willful defiance. This new law takes effect at the beginning of the next school year in August.
