(Migrant Shelter put on hold)….It had been scheduled to open November 1st.
It had been built in an abandoned grocery store in Mexicali. Residents in the neighborhood strongly protested against the shelter, and the government agreed not to open the shelter. It was to house asylum seekers returned to Mexico to await the asylum process in the United States. Baja California Governor Jaime Bonilla told a San Diego newspaper recently said the shelter might not open at all because of the protests and because it might not be needed. Human Rights advocates say the decision puts the asylum seekers at the mercy of private shelters in Mexicali, exposing them to dangerous living conditions that allow private shelters to exploit the people they are supposed to protect.
