U.S. Border Patrol agents at the Highway 86 Immigration checkpoint near Salton City stopped a big rig with over $2,500,000 in assorted drugs Sunday evening.
The incident occurred at about 11:00 p.m. Sunday when the Freightliner approached the checkpoint. A canine detection team alerted to the truck and it was sent to secondary inspection. BP agents located several packages hidden in the sleeper compartment of the big rig. The packages contained over 390 pounds of methamphetamine values at $1,016,000 , over 41 pounds of heroin valued at over $1,500,000 and 5.1 pounds of cocaine valued at nearly $58,000. The truck driver , a citizen of Mexico , was turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration for further investigation.
