An ultralight aircraft tracked by Border Patrol agents dropped over $1.4 million worth of methamphetamine.
Shortly after midnight Sunday agents observed an ultralight aircraft cross the border from Mexico into the United States. The aircraft , flying without any lights , descended over an agricultural field north of Calexico and then flew back to Mexico. Agents responded to the field and discovered a metallic cage , a bicycle , and two zippered bags hidden in heavy brush. Agents also located to individuals nearby. The two were arrested on suspicion of receiving the dropped load. Agents inspected the zippered bags and discovered nearly 130 pounds of methamphetamine powder with an estimated value of over $1.4 million. The two subjects that were arrested were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration for further investigation. Chief Patrol Agent Gloria I. Chavez said , " Ultralight aircraft not only pose a threat to legitimate air traffic in the vicinity , but also to national security. These aircraft are able to carry small payloads of dangerous cargo or dangerous people."
