The Imperial County Public Health Department has reported the first flu-related death of the 2018-19 flu season.
The Health Department says that the individual was in the 60-69 age range and had underlying health issues. The individual had been transferred to a San Diego area hospital and later died. Laboratory testing was positive for the influenza A virus. According to hospital records this person had not received a flu shot this season.
Flu shots are available at the Public Health Department on a walk-in basis during regular hours. County Health Officer Dr. Stephen Munday said , " Each year , the flu circulates in our community. Last year flu-related illnesses were responsible for seven deaths in Imperial County. Vaccination against influenza is strongly recommended. All persons six months of age and older , including health care personnel , should receive a flu shot now if they have not yet received one this flu season."
To stop the spread of flu and other respiratory illnesses you should also:
. Stay home while sick and limit contact with others.
. Cover your cough or sneeze with your sleeve or disposable tissue.
. Wash hands frequently and thoroughly with soap and warm water , or use
an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
. Avoid touching your eyes , nose and mouth.
