A woman was arrested Thursday after she left her 2-year old child in a car while she went shopping.

According to El Centro Police , dispatchers received a call of a small child left unattended in a locked vehicle at a local store. El Centro Fire personnel responded along with police officers and found the car locked , with the windows rolled up and the child in the back seat unresponsive. Fire personnel broke out a window and began treating the child for heat exhaustion. The child became responsive and was taken to the hospital for further treatment. Ambient temperatures were over 100 degrees and it was estimated that the inside of the car was over 140 degrees. 

ECPD officers found the child's mother in the store and arrested her for child endangerment. Officers are continuing their investigation along with Child Protective Services. 

The El Centro Police Department thanked the community members that called in to report the situation.
