The El Centro City Council will consider putting an additional half-cent sales tax proposal on the November ballot.

At the recommendation of city staff, the council will consider the adoption of a resolution that would place the measure on the November 3, 2026, General Election ballot. At the Tuesday , June 16, 2026, meeting, the agenda item calls for submitting to electors a ballot measure to establish a new transactions and use tax rate of .5%. The City would request the County Board of Supervisors consent to the consolidation of the ballot measure and directing the City Attorney to prepare an impartial analysis of the measure and providing for pro and con rebuttal arguments. The current sales tax rate in the city of El Centro is 8.25% and that would rise to 8;75% if a ballot measure is approved.

Other items on the agenda include possible action on the award of the Extension of Imperial Avenue from Danenberg Drive to Manuel Ortiz Avenue.

The Council will meet in Closed Session at 2:30 p.m. with an agenda that includes a conference with labor negotiators for various unrepresented employees.  There will be a conference with real property negotiators over price and term for properties of El Centro Regional Medical Center. The negotiations concern ECRMC and the Imperial Valley Healthcare District.

Brawley's rate is 8.75%. Calexico 8.25%. Calipatria, Holtville, Imperial and Westmorland are all at 7.75%. Highest in the state of California is 10.75% in the city of Lynwood.
