A fast moving brush fire has displaced residents in the Campo area as well as shut down Interstate 8.

The fire was reported at about 1:00 p.m. Tuesday afternoon on the Campo Reservation north of Interstate 8 near Tusil Road. The fire quickly spread and jumped Interstate 8 and continued to burn south of the freeway. Homes and businesses were ordered evacuated and an Evacuation Center was set up at the Golden Acorn Casino. Interstate 8 was completely closed from Kitchen Creek to State Route 94 with traffic backed up and few alternative roads available due to the quickly spreading fire. By 5:30 p.m. CalFire reported that over 550 acres had burned. Ground crews and aircraft battled the fire throughout the day and into the night.
