The cause in all areas has been very high levels of PM 10. PM 10 refers to airborne particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of 10 micrometers or less. These are microscopic solid particles or liquid droplets that are small enough to be inhaled into the human respiratory system. Because they are inhalable, these particles can pass through the nose and throat to reach the lungs. Exposure can cause eye, nose, and throat irritation, worsen asthma or bronchitis, and is linked to more serious cardiovascular and respiratory disease.
