A Yuma County man drowned after his car plunged into a canal.

Yuma County Sheriff's deputies responded to the report of a traffic accident at 3:49 p.m. Tuesday afternoon. Initial reports indicate a 2006 Mercury Grand Marquis was westbound on County 8th Street near Avenue 44 E. The driver failed to negotiate a curve in the road and veered down an embankment and went into a canal. Both the driver and a passenger were able to get out of the car but the driver, Missael Orozco Leon, 32, of Somerton, Arizona, was swept away by the current and drowned. The passenger survived the crash. According to the Yuma County Sheriff's Office release impairment and speed are suspected to be a factor in the accident.
