The 2024 Imperial County Agricultural Commissioners Crop and Livestock Report is out.
According to Ag Commissioner Jolene Dessert, 2024 gross production value dropped 7.57 percent from the previous year and harvested acres in the Valley was down nearly 9 percent. Gross production for 2024 was nearly $2.5 Billion with cattle the number one commodity followed by alfalfa, broccoli, leaf lettuce, head lettuce, Bermuda grass hay, sugar beets, carrots, spinach and onions. Gross value of livestock was $705,727,000, up 1.5 percent from 2023. Big drops were noted in seed crops and nursery products with a 26.72 percent drop in value, vegetable and melon crops were down nearly 16 percent. Fruit and nut crops were down 12.11 percent. Sugar beet gross value went up significantly for 2024 but with the closing of Spreckles Sugar that acreage will probably go into other crops.
