A Yuma man died after being shot by Yuma County Sheriff's Deputies.
At about 7:22 p.m. Tuesday, YCSO deputies went to a residence in the 11-300 block of South Avenue 12 E after a report of a man with a gun. Deputies made contact with Lewis Berne, 77, of Yuma, who was shooting outside his residence and making suicidal statements. Berne refused to follow commands to surrender and was stepping in and out of his residence brandishing a handgun. The man fired the gun and was subsequently shot by deputies. Berne was taken to a hospital where he later died. The Yuma Regional Critical Incident Response Team has assumed the investigation. The deputies involved in the shooting have been placed on modified duty.
