A second day of severe thunderstorms swept through the Imperial Valley Monday.
The National Weather Service (NWS) recorded rainfall of up to 1 inch in parts of the Valley. Winds gusted at over 60 miles er hour knocking down utility poles and trees from one end of the county to the other. The California Highway Patrol and Imperial County Public Works Department reported many county rods closed due to the downed power lines, flooding and mud. Interstate 8 was blocked for a time as power poles were blown down blocking lanes of the freeway. State Route 98 was closed in the western part of the Valley due to washouts and debris blocking the road. State Route 86 north of Brawley was blocked with mud and debris as well.
The California Highway Patrol also responded to numerous accidents including several reports of big rigs being blown overhand cars that overturned due to the road conditions.
Intersectins in several cities were flooded and traffic was treacherous due to the slick streets.
The Imperial Irrigation, still working on some of the Sunday storm issues, had crews responding to power outages throughout the Valley again Monday. AT & T reported numerous outages of phone and internet service as well.
