(CHP attempts to stop a speeding vehicle)....It happened Tuesday afternoon at around 4:28 pm.
A gray Kia was seen speeding on Mead Road, just west of Highway 111. The CHP patrol unit attempted a traffic enforcement stop on the vehicle. The driver of the KIA ignored the attempt and led the California Highway Patrol unit on a pursuit through Brawley, failing to stop for multiple stop signs and traffic lights. The pursuit left Brawley moving on to eastbound Highway 78. Speeds reached in excess of 85 miles per hour. The Kia traveled onto south Highway 111, west on Worthington Road and south on Dogwood, with speeds increasing to 95 mph. The pursuit traveled into El Centro west on Ross Road, turned right onto 4th Street. Due to heavy traffic, the pursuit was discontinued. The suspect vehicle slowed, turning right onto State Street. The KIA went to the end of State, crashing on a set of railroad tracks. The Highway Patrol was then able to remove the suspect driver from the vehicle. She was identified as 27 year old Lauren Carpio of Brawley.. She had suffered minor injuries and was transported by ambulance to El Centro Regional Medical Center. She was treated for her injuries. The CHP says she was wearing her seatbelt and DUI doe not appear to have been a factor in the incident. The investigation is continuing.
