The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has issued their final report on a September 8, 2022 train accident that claimed two lives.
The accident occurred at about 3:00 a.m. on the Union Pacific tracks near Niland when a freight train crashed into rail cars parked on a siding. The two operators of the freight train were killed in the accident. According to the NTSB, errors in dispatching the train caused it to be routed onto the siding and the parked rail cars. The subsequent collision led to the derailment of several cars and a locomotive. According to reports, a dispatcher even overruled the train crew who had been told that there were still cars parked on the siding. Also contributing to the accident was the failure of two backup systems that should have prevented the switching error.
